mokan Mavrex on door with hand on adjuster button

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Mavrex have different resistance settings?

Yes! There are three different settings.

This is adjusted quickly and easily by depressing one or both buttons on the bottom of the unit.

Resistance is measured in newtons. Which here on Earth is approximately equal to 0.1kg (I can hear all the physicists out there screaming at me but I really don’t want to get too technical here!)

Press both buttons in: 25N

Press one button in and one out: 50N

Both buttons out: 75N

These settings are roughly equivalent to 2.5kg/5Kg/7.5kg per hand which doesn’t sound like much but after a couple of minutes even on the middle setting it’s pretty tiring.

Roughly speaking the lowest setting is a little easier than paddling a surfboard through water, the middle setting approx the same as paddling and the hardest setting is harder than paddling and gets tiring pretty quick.

It’s a fantastic system for building paddle endurance so you can paddle for longer and catch more waves and become a better surfer!

Why is the Mavrex better than resistance bands?

While compared to resistance bands, the Mavrex is a completely different superior training system.

The difficulty with resistance bands is the elasticity which gives more resistance though the stroke. They are really useful for rehab and sometimes that increasing resistance is actually what you want for that physiotherapy.
However, that's not a realistic simulation of paddling. Water doesn’t increase in resistance as you pull through it.

The Mavrex provides constant resistance. The resistance offered at the beginning of the stroke is almost identical to that at the end of the stroke. This is a much better representation of the resistance your muscles face during paddling.

At Mokan, we developed the Mavrex exactly because we had tried lots of different elastic bands / bungee systems and never found anything we liked or that worked in the way we wanted. Also with some elastic systems you have the added risk of the bungee cord flicking off and hitting you in the face!

All that being said you can obviously get resistance bands cheaper and money is tight for a lot of people right now. There is a lot of technology in the Mavrex so you pay more for that superior product. You get what you pay for I guess!

Why not just swim in a pool or go for a paddle?

This is a question we get a lot, and we completely agree; If you can swim every day or get in the ocean, we absolutely agree with you; you don’t need a Mavrex!

For the rest of us who can't get in the water as we’d like, or are injured (Dave developed this product when he had a knee injury) or have to do child care to do or when the weather is miserable surf and the surf is onshore slop- this is to keep that upper body fitness that we lose so quickly when out of the water.

We have a public swimming pool round the corner from Mokan HQ, and live within cycling distance to the beach but we still can't get in the water every day. However, with the Maverx always set up we can use it for 10 minutes whenever we want.
